Jet2.com has completed a two-year retrofit installation programme, which has seen Split Scimitar Winglets installed onto 74 of its Boeing 737-800NG aircraft.
The retrofit improves aircraft efficiency, reducing fuel burn by 1.5% and helping to cut the airline’s annual carbon emissions by over 28,000 tonnes.
The multi-million pound retrofit, with the innovative winglet designs supplied by Aviation Partners Boeing (APB), also means that the leading leisure airline will reduce annual fuel consumption by more than 11 million litres.
The completion of the retrofit in the latest tangible action in Jet2’s Sustainability Strategy which has been repeatedly recognised for its results-driven approach such as:
- Investing billions into decarbonising its fleet, with a firm order for 155 brand-new Airbus A321neo aircraft which give a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 20% and are 50% quieter compared to the aircraft they are replacing.
- The electrification of Jet2.com owned ground service equipment, with more than 50% of Jet2.com ground service equipment (GSE) now fully electric, and all GSE at Newcastle Airport now fully electric.
- A climate transition plan, focused on existing technologies and tangible actions that can be taken currently. This will see Jet2.com reduce its carbon emissions per revenue paying passenger kilometre (gCO2/RPK) by 35% in 2035 compared to 2019 (43.55gCO2/RPK in 2035 vs. 67gCO2/RPK in 2019).

David Neill, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director at Jet2 said: “This multi-million pound investment in our fleet is the latest demonstration of our firm commitment to taking tangible actions that reduce our environmental impacts. This innovative winglet technology from APB is playing a major role in helping us reduce emissions and is just one of the many steps we are taking on our ambitious sustainability strategy.”
