In the latest example of the company taking tangible actions as part of its ambitious sustainability strategy, leading leisure airline Jet2.com is applying lightweight paint to its aircraft, resulting in significant weight savings and reduced fuel burn across its fleet.

Jet2.com has applied the lightweight paint to over 80 of its aircraft, which accounts for an annual fuel saving of almost quarter of a million litres, equating to a reduction of over 500 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Aircraft paint specialists, Airbourne Colours, are carrying out the work on Jet2.com’s existing fleet, and all of the company’s brand-new Airbus A321 neo aircraft are being delivered with the paint already applied. The company’s entire fleet will be using it by 2030.

Manufactured by AkzoNobel, the paint is delivering fuel savings thanks to a weight saving of more than 20kg per aircraft.

This initiative is the latest tangible action in Jet2’s Sustainability Strategy which has been repeatedly recognised for its results-driven approach such as:

  • Investing billions into decarbonising its fleet, with a firm order for 155 brand-new Airbus A321neo aircraft which give a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 20% and are 50% quieter compared to the aircraft they are replacing.
  • Completing a multi-million pound winglet retrofit installation programme, which has seen Split Scimitar Winglets installed onto 74 of its Boeing 737-800NG aircraft, reducing fuel burn by 1.5% and helping to cut the airline’s annual carbon emissions by over 28,000 tonnes.
  • The electrification of Jet2.com owned ground service equipment, with more than 50% of Jet2.com ground service equipment (GSE) now fully electric, and all GSE at Newcastle Airport now fully electric.
  • A climate transition plan, focused on existing technologies and tangible actions that can be taken currently. This will see Jet2.com reduce its carbon emissions per revenue paying passenger kilometre (gCO2/RPK) by 35% in 2035 compared to 2019 (43.55gCO2/RPK in 2035 vs. 67gCO2/RPK in 2019).

The company’s full sustainability strategy, which saw Jet2 named winner in the Package Holiday/Leisure Airline category at the global AirlineRatings.com 2025 Sustainability Awards, can be viewed here: www.jet2.com/sustainability

David Neill, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director at Jet2 said: “Applying lightweight paint across our entire fleet enables us to reduce fuel burn and lower emissions, and it is the latest example of us taking tangible actions as part of our ambitious sustainability strategy. Alongside the many other actions that we are taking right across our operations, the use of pioneering lightweight paint demonstrates how committed we are to looking at every single aspect of our business to realise where we can make a difference.”
