We stayed in the Hilton Fashion District Hotel in Chelsea, a great hotel which had a rooftop cocktail bar and a fantastic view of the Empire State Building. The cocktails were $15 each, all excellent and not overly expensive given the view.
Top Recommendations:
• Brooklyn Street Art Tour. A free walking tour around an area of Brooklyn known for its graffiti and street art, probably my highlight of the weekend.
• Walk the Brooklyn Bridge. We walked from Manhattan over to Brooklyn and got the subway back, it doesn’t take too long and the weather was great. You get a really good view of the Manhattan skyline so it’s worth doing if you have time.
• Ice Skating at Bryant Park. Bryant Park is much smaller than the famous Central Park but it’s really nice and there were loads of stalls selling Christmas gifts and decorations.
• Breakfast at Chelsea Market. Loads of places to eat and some quirky shops.
• Shopping. We visited New York just before Thanksgiving but most of the shops had already started with pre Black Friday sales with lots of them offering 40% off everything in the store. I’d recommend Macy’s and Century 21 for some bargains, especially as you won’t find the same shops in the UK.
• Christmas Windows on Fifth Avenue. Not everywhere had their Christmas window displays up as a lot of the stores wait until after Thanksgiving, but the ones that did were amazing, particularly Lorde & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue
• Central Park. The park is lovely in the Autumn. It’s a lot bigger than you might expect so I definitely recommend taking a map, especially if you want to see any of the spots used in your favourite films.
• Hell’s Kitchen. A really bustling and vibrant area which is great in the evening with loads of restaurants and bars to choose from. We went to a really nice little Mexican restaurant called El Centro, which I’d definitely recommend.
