The 53rd Vienna International Film Festival takes place between October 22 to November 5, offering leading filmmakers the chance to showcase their work in one of Europe’s most picturesque cities
This year’s event comprises around 150 feature films including Woody Allen’s latest effort Irrational Man, starring Oscar-nominated stars Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, while the multi-award winning comedy-drama Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is hotly tipped to take one of the festival’s prestigious prizes.
“There is no real mystery as to why the Viennale is such a great film festival, and right now easily my favourite,” said Kieron Corless of Sight and Sound, “It’s not big and impersonal; rather, warm and approachable and friendly. The programme feels entirely coherent. […] This is a festival with character.”
Festivalgoers looking for a break from the big-screen have a staggering array of sights to see in Austria’s capital including the intricate architecture of the Vienna State Opera, Schönbrunn Palace and historic Votive Church.
The perfect location for a romantic autumn break, couples can soak up the serene atmosphere of the city’s historical centre Innere Stadt before taking a walk through the idyllic StadtPark with its stunning flowers and golden statues. It’s no wonder that Vienna is continually voted one of the best places in the world to live.
