The Algarve had a cause for celebration recently as it was named the ‘Golf Destination of the Year – Europe’ at the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) Awards 2014.

With almost 40 world-class golf courses set within this gorgeous Portuguese region, the Algarve is a deserved winner of the accolade. Amongst that number, it also boasts some of the highest ranked golf courses in Europe. That includes Monte Rei, a stunning Jack Nicklaus signature course, Oceanico, which has been the proud host of the Portuguese Open, and Quinta da Ria designed by Rocky Roquemore.

There are several resorts that serve as ace bases for golfing holidays on the Algarve. For instance, Vilamoura has six golf courses within easy reach, while Albufeira and Portimao are vibrant cities close to several great golfing clubs.

Established in 2000, the IAGTO Awards are the toast of the golf tourism calendar. They are voted for by more than 500 IAGTO operators and International Golf Travel Writers’ Association (IGTWA) travel writers. The 14th awards took place in Costa Dorada on 14 November 2014.

All of the great golf on the Algarve can easily be enjoyed with Jet2.com flights to Faro.
