Scottish Airport Enjoys a Busy Start to the Summer

Glasgow International Airport has experienced the busiest June it has had in five years, as traveller numbers rose to more than 770,000 – a 5.4 per cent increase on 2012.
The news falls in line with the increase in availability of cheap flights to Marmaris and the Balearic Islands, with Turkey and Spain coming top in a list of the most popular destinations. There has also been a rise in the number of passengers travelling further afield, with flights to New York in demand.
Amanda McMillan, the airport’s managing director, said of the news:
“It really is an exciting time for Glasgow Airport and it’s particularly pleasing to follow the unveiling of our new logo and the launch of the Dreamliner’s first Scottish flight [to Mexico] with news of further passenger growth.”
Growth Expected to Continue
The Glasgow figures closely follow the news that Edinburgh Airport also recorded impressive passenger numbers in June, with its total rising above 950,000, representing a rise of 8.4 per cent. While Glasgow has been growing steadily since the start of 2011, Edinburgh – which is the busiest airport in Scotland – only recently began to show any signs of improvement after it endured a 12 month period of instability.
With a number of cheap flights to the Balearic Islands offered by Jet2.com, the growth is expected to continue for both airports. Edinburgh is thought to be calling for a direct link to be created with the M8, in the hope that it will help the airport accommodate the extra passengers.
