Prague Castle Displays Crown Jewels

Prague is known for its rich history and tourists flock to experience it every year, but visitors to the Czech capital this month have been treated to a rare public display.
As of May 10, the Czech crown jewels were put on show for 10 days to mark the 20th anniversary of the Czech independence, the election of President Milos Zeman and also the 95th anniversary of the founding of the country.
Since the jewels are part of the seven century old item display that are only on show for special occasions, it was a truly remarkable time to visit the castle and see the incalculable crown jewels in real life. The crown was worn first by Charles IV of Luxembourg in 1347 for his Prague coronation, who was king of Bohemia and a Holy Roman emperor.

The most recent exhibition during which the public saw the special collection was held in 2008, which makes a total of 11 public showings since the beginning of the 20th century.
Since the crown jewels are worth so much, they are usually kept in a designated room equipped with a stringent security system.
