Holidaymakers booking cheap flights to the Spanish Costas with Jet2.com this summer can keep costs down by using public transport, and for those travelling to the Costa Blanca, the choice is obvious - hop on a Number 9 train.
The Costa Blanca will be a top holiday choice for budget-conscious families in 2013, with plenty of low-key alternatives to big brash Benidorm. The ancient fishing village of Calpe and the mediaeval market town of Altea are just two options. To keep costs down, families can elect to travel around by bus, but a faster – and equally cheap - option is to use the Line 9 rail link, a narrow-gauge service which links all three resorts with 13 others, and is about to be upgraded.
There was some consternation over the future of Line 9 recently, when Spain announced major cutbacks in its rail services, including the axing of several lines. However, it has since been announced that Line 9 will not be affected – in fact, it will get a make-over, with better tracks and trains.
With the increasing pressure for everyone to be more environmentally friendly, this is great news for the tourist trade. The Denia-Barcelona trains – which run at hourly intervals and are always on time – offer a cheap, comfortable way to get to popular resorts like Benissa, Cap Nagret and Altea, with no need to worry about traffic queues or finding somewhere to park. The views are pretty spectacular too.
Anyone booking cheap flights to the Spanish Costas this summer should consider leaving the driving licence behind and buying rail cards. Children, especially, are sure to love the adventure!
