Barcelona is often described as being the most cosmopolitan city in the whole of Spain - it is a city where the focus is very much on fun and much can be seen in the quirky architecture that provides an incredible level of colour on the streets of the city.

More than ten million travellers visit the city each year to explore these streets and absorb the vibrant atmosphere of the city.  Just outside of the city however are a number of attractions that are worth making a day trip to see.

Montserrat Monastery

It is believed that the Benedictine monks have been in residence at the monastery for over a thousand years.  This dramatic mountain forms the backdrop for many who make the pilgrimage to the monastery every year.

Hiking boots are not a statutory requirement though as after an hour’s train journey from Barcelona you can take the cable car or rack railway to the monastery buildings.  Legend states that a religious icon, the Black Madonna was found in a cavern by a shepherd who saw mysterious lights and heard angelic songs.  The Madonna is especially popular with the newly married who come to the monastery to receive her blessing.

Planning Ahead

Travellers to Barcelona often miss the opportunity to visit the monastery by focussing only on the attractions of the city, leaving so much of the region undiscovered.   Consider booking some day trips when you book your summer 2013 holiday and make sure you see as much as you can.  Cheap flights to Barcelona are available from Jet2.com.
