Fans of the medieval TV fantasy ‘Game of Thrones’ had good reason to book cheap flights to Dubrovnik recently, when scenes from the new series were shot in the city between September 27 and October 7.

A TV fantasy with the style and budget of big screen epics like Lord of the Rings, the show is adapted from George R.R Martin’s novel series, entitled ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. The first season was filmed mainly in Ireland, with certain scenes being shot in Mdina in Malta.

However, production difficulties led to the second series being relocated from Malta to Croatia, with the ancient walled city of Dubrovnik being a perfect stand-in for the mediaeval coastal fortress of the books. The ancient walls, crumbling piers and even the weather were exactly what the film crew was looking for, and the Dubrovnik Tourist Board was happy for them to be used again when the crew returned to film the new show.

Series three of Game of Thrones will be screened some time in 2013 but many of the locations can be visited by booking cheap flights to Dubrovnik with Jet2.com. There are, as yet, no walking tours specific to the series but visitors can organise their own by visiting Lokrum Island, Pile Gate, St. Dominic Street, Ploce Gate and Fort Lovrijenac (the Fort of St Lawrence), finishing with a walk along the sea walls. All these locations can be seen on screen next year, although nothing beats seeing the kingdom for real.
