Everyone is aware of the famous tower in the centre of Pisa which lists in a gravity defying way to the side, but what not many people are aware of is that the Colosseum is following its lead.
Italian authorities have revealed that the ancient and iconic amphitheatre is now leaning to one side itself, with the north side of the building being a full fifteen inches lower than the southern side. This is perhaps one of the most recognisable structures on the planet and it is therefore imperative that the authorities do whatever they can to preserve this ancient structure.
Taking Investigative Steps
The fact that the building is leaning was discovered last year. It is believed that the listing is due to a major crack in the concrete base beneath the structure. Whatever the cause it means that there is going to have to be a major operation undertaken to take remedial action to stop the building leaning any further.
If it is anything like the operation that was undertaken to stop the tower Pisa sinking any lower the Colosseum may be closed to the public for several years to allow the engineers to do their job.
Preserved for the Future
There are many ancient structures that are beginning to suffer the trials of time and it is unknown just how many will survive in the years to come, so it is good to know that cheap flights to Rome are easily available through companies like Jet2.com to allow us to see them for ourselves before it is too late.
