You’re bound to have heard of this iconic, figure-like sculpture, so go and visit it in the Gateshead area. Designed by Antony Gormley and completed in 1998, it’s been a landmark sight in the north-east for decades. It’s just off the A1, so best to get there by car.
If you’re keen on art, don’t miss the BALTIC Centre. Its various exhibits and installations change over the months, but at least one of the galleries across the building’s levels will have something to catch your eye. And, after you’ve looked around, dine in the fantastic on-site rooftop restaurant, Six.
Lush, green hillsides drape across this northernmost county. You can enjoy the medley of picturesque beaches and intriguing castle complexes like Bamburgh. The stunning Cheviot Hills are a top pick for cycling or hiking, while Hadrian’s Wall is one of England’s most famous historic sites.
