People booking cheap flights to Tenerife with Jet2.com are visiting one of the world’s top holiday destinations, according to a Guardian poll.

The survey, run by The Guardian, revealed Tenerife to be one of the most popular holiday destinations in 2012, sharing top place with Mallorca, also in Spain. Endless sunshine, splendid beaches and an abundance of pubs, clubs and hotels have made them popular with British holidaymakers for many years, but what really swung the vote was the sports training factor – both islands have first-class training facilities, which proved an irresistible draw for professional athletes and holidaymakers alike.

With health and fitness being increasingly important to 21st century travellers, it seems likely that this trend will continue. Many sports resorts – such as Club La Santa in Lanzarote – already cater for both serious and recreational sportspeople, and have done for some time. One group about to jet off to the Canaries for some pre-season training is the Warrington Wolves, a team of professional rugby players that previously did its warm-weather training in Australia.

This time, the players are booking in to their regular base on Tenerife to prep up for the 2013 Super League season. With first class facilities, it is a base they have used twice before, as team coach Tony Smith explains:

"We are familiar with it and feel at home there. It has been good for our prep in the past and I expect it to be the same this year."

One thing that seems certain is that cheap flights to Tenerife will continue to be popular, whether the trip is for business or pleasure.
