Skiathos is as idyllic as the Greek islands get. It may only be dinky but it packs in plenty of natural beauty. Pine-studded hills and gold-sand beaches unfurl from quaint Skiathos town, the island’s heart. This is the place to go after the sun goes down, with waterfront bars and tucked away tavernas to eat and drink your way around.

This island’s all about the beaches, with more than 60 of them spread across the 27 miles of coastline. Skiathos’ south-west side is where you’ll find the best of them – Koukounaries is our top pick. A long sandy sweep is lined with loungers and chilled-out beach bars, with a stunning view out to sea. Neighbouring Maratha Beach is a hidden gem with a private-beach feel.
Along with its neighbouring island, Skopelos, Skiathos was a main filming location for the movie Mamma Mia!. Look out for St. Nikolaos Bell Tower in the capital, Skiathos Town, and be sure to visit the Old Port, as these were both the settings for key scenes in the film. You can also catch a boat to Skopelos to discover even more.
Skiathos is one of the more relaxed Greek islands, even in the height of summer. It means you’ve all the time in the world to relax at sleepy villages such as Kanapitsa and Plantanias. You can also take a break from the beach by discovering the 18th-century Evangelistria Monastery in the capital and the crumbling Kastro peering over the northern tip of the island.
