Looming over the city, perched atop a hill is the impressive 13th century fort, or Kastro. The mighty building has survived the passing of time and some big earthquakes too! What’s more, a trip up to the Kastro also reveals incredible views of the town below and sea beyond.
Although almost completely levelled by an earthquake in 1986, Kalamata’s Old Town is a charming example of ancient Greek design. Admire the beautiful Byzantine church and soak up the history as you wander through the Square of Ypapanti. Finish with a trip to the Historical and Folklore Museum to learn more about the town’s past.
The closer you head to the shore, the more modern the city becomes. The beachfront is lined with a fantastic selection of restaurants, where sampling the world-famous Kalamata olives is a must. You can also indulge in a little retail therapy while you’re here, and hit the shops in the new town.
