Chamonix ski resort

Nestled beneath the towering Mont Blanc, one of Europe’s highest peaks, Chamonix’s the perfect winter playground for adventurers. The vast and varied terrain delivers something for everyone. Brévent and Flégère boast sweeping panoramas and perfect pistes, while Grands Montets tests experts with steep descents and deep powder. And then there’s the legendary Vallée Blanche. This epic, 20km off-piste route weaves through glaciers and icefalls and is accessible via the Aiguille du Midi cable car. Non-skier or just fancy a break from your boots? Spend an afternoon at the alpine museum, learning about the pioneers who first conquered Mont Blanc or take the Montenvers cog railway up to the Mer de Glace glacier. You could give snowshoeing or ice skating a go too!

When the sun dips behind the mountains, the town comes into its own. Take your pick from the plethora of bustling cafés and restaurants serving hearty Savoyard cuisine. Think bubbling fondue made with local cheeses, golden tartiflette layered with potatoes, bacon and reblochon or raclette scraped onto your plate at the table. For those seeking relaxation, Chamonix’s wellness scene comes up trumps. Many hotels and spas offer saunas, thermal baths and massage treatments for sore muscles. Sign us up!

The location

Chamonix lies in the Haute-Savoie region of eastern France, bordering Switzerland and Italy. Perched at 1,035m beneath Mont Blanc, you can expect breathtaking alpine scenery as standard. Known as the birthplace of mountaineering, you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied for a week or more. The town itself is all cobbled streets, stylish boutiques and cosy chalets. Beyond its natural beauty, Chamonix holds deep historical significance. In fact, it hosted the first major winter sporting event in 1924. It’s a doddle to reach too, thanks to regular Jet2 ski flights to nearby Geneva Airport.

Hidden gems

Looking to go off the beaten path? Discover tucked-away mountain cafés where locals share stories over coffee and tarte aux myrtilles or slip into an old wooden refuge for a fireside lunch. Explore lesser-known ski routes at Le Tour or snowshoe to the secluded Vallorcine Valley. After dark, trade the bustle for candlelit wine bars and live jazz.

Family fun

Travelling with tots? Chamonix’s on hand and ready to entertain every generation. Little ones can learn their first turns at Les Planards or Les Houches, while teens chase excitement on sled runs and ice-skating rinks. Off the slopes, families can ride the bright-red Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace or uncover shimmering ice caves.

More than the mountains

The activities don’t end at the last lifts here. Ease tired legs in a thermal spa framed by Mont Blanc’s peaks or sip champagne in a candlelit lounge. Boutique shopping lines the streets, so you can browse for handmade leather boots, local art or mountain-inspired jewellery too.
