Soldeu El Tarter ski resort

Nestled high in the Pyrenees, Soldeu and El Tarter are two skiing hubs in Andorra’s Grandvalira area. There are over 200km of linked pistes, offering something for everyone – from the first-timers to the pros. For beginners, Soldeu is a top choice. The English-speaking ski schools are among the best in Europe, with wide nursery slopes right at village level. And kids will love the Kids’ Forest area, a themed learning zone where they can build their confidence in a fun, safe environment. For a different experience, try cross-country skiing or fat-biking along the quieter trails near Canillo.

Intermediates will be in their element too. The runs from Soldeu down to El Tarter are ideal if you’re looking to test your technique. Don’t miss the scenic Gall de Bosc run for unbeatable views! Those with a few trips under their belt will also be able to test their mettle — particularly on the steep Avet and Àliga World Cup pistes or in the freeride zones off the Solana chairlift. Snowboarder? The El Tarter Snowpark is one of the Pyrenees’ finest, with jumps, rails and a superpipe. Off the mountain, Soldeu’s après scene is fabulously friendly. Think lively bars, mountain-view terraces and hearty Catalan cuisine. El Tarter is quieter, perfect for families.

The location

Soldeu and El Tarter are located in the region of Canillo in Andorra, perched at around 1800m. The surrounding landscape is a spectacular blend of rugged peaks, frozen rivers and sunlit forests, forming part of the Grandvalira ski area – the largest in the Pyrenees. They’re easily accessible too, just a few hours’ drive from Barcelona. The villages themselves have retained an authentic alpine feel, with traditional stone buildings, local shops and family-run restaurants serving hearty mountain fare. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, there’s even more to get stuck into. You can ride a dog-sled through forests, drive a snowmobile across open plateaus or strap on snowshoes to explore hidden trails.

Local flavours

The food scene here blends traditional Andorran recipes with international flair. You’ll find cosy mountain chalets serving grilled meats, creamy fondues and slow-cooked stews, alongside stylish spots offering tapas, sushi and fine wines. Whether you’re after gourmet dining or hearty comfort food, there are memorable meals to be had everywhere.

Après adventures

Après-ski is a laidback affair around these parts. Head to L’Abarset in El Tarter, the Pyrenees’ buzziest venue, where you can drink with the locals on the terrace. Those after a quieter vibe can sip mulled wine by the fire or enjoy tapas under twinkling fairy lights.

Memories on the mountain

For families, this area’s a box-ticker. The ski and snowboard schools are renowned for their English-speaking instructors and kids adore the Kinder Garden and Kids’ Forest areas. Off the slopes, families can go sledging, ice skating or take horse-drawn sleigh rides through the snow. Accommodation ranges from self-catering apartments to family-run hotels, all close to the lifts.
