Salzburg straddles the Austrian-German border and is well-equipped for much more than fairytale cityscapes. It’s the key to hundreds of ski resorts, including Mayrhofen, where you can check out the epic Vans Penken Park. Looking for a side of cinematic scenery with your skiing? Head to Kaprun or Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
If you don’t want to take your time getting to the slopes, opt for a ski resort that’s closer to the airport. Choose from the likes of Wagrain, Saalbach-Hinterglemm and Söll — they’ve all got transfer times of less than two hours.
The Kitzsteinhorn Glacier ski resort is the highest in the area, with lifts topping out at a whopping 3,029 m. These slopes are some of the most snowsure in Austria and are easy to reach from the village of Kaprun.
Just under two hours’ drive from Salzburg Airport is the Skiwelt, Austria’s largest linked ski area. It’s found in the stunning Wilder Kaiser mountain range and boasts resorts across nine villages for family and friends alike. It’s generally more suited for intermediate skiers and snowboarders, as it’s got plenty of blue and red runs.
