A bustling city
Nestled on the western Anatolian coastline, Izmir has great transport connections to some of Turkey’s most popular beach resorts. But before you plan your trip to the seaside, it’s worth staying a while to take in the thriving atmosphere of this huge city. You could visit the Izmir Agora Open Air Museum, with ruins that date back to the 2nd century, and the elegant Clock Tower in Konak Square.
Break for the beach
It’s easy to enjoy some great beaches from Izmir, as the resorts of both Çeşme and Kusadasi are just over an hour’s drive away. Çeşme has some stunning sandy shores, along with a sparkling port and a 16th-century castle that adds to the beauty of the skyline. Kusadasi is much loved for its huge choice of eight beaches and its lively nightlife.
Incredible ancient attractions
Izmir puts you in a prime location for visiting some of Turkey’s most famed attractions. Ephesus is only an hour’s drive away. This amazing historical site is home to the Roman Library of Celsus and was the original place of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Temple of Artemis. It’s also worth making the further three-hour journey to Pamukkale. Translated as ‘Cotton Castle’ this otherworldly site has beautiful travertines filled with thermal spring water.
