Former Aircraft Maintenance Technician Apprentices at Jet2.com, Matthew Thornton and Harry Richardson, were shortlisted as finalists for the SkillsHouse Career and Technical Education Awards 2023, with Matthew achieving the title of ‘Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Learner of the Year'.

Matthew was announced as the winner at an awards ceremony held at the University of Bradford’s Great Hall on 4th July which celebrated the achievements of young people in the district and the businesses who have supported them.

Now in their fourth year, the awards provide recognition to learners for their exceptional contributions towards developing their education and careers, providing the opportunity for candidates to share their inspirational stories.

Both Jet2.com colleagues were shortlisted for successfully meeting the criteria of demonstrating independent learning to enhance their employability skills and knowledge about the industry sector.

Throughout their apprenticeship journeys, the pair completed their CAA Part 66 A Licence module exams to understand the theory behind aircraft maintenance as well as developing crucial hand skills and carrying out engineering tasks to put their learning into practice. Following successful completion of their End Point Assessment, Matthew and Harry are now settling in well with their roles as qualified Mechanics at Jet2.com’s Aircraft Hangar at Leeds Bradford Airport.

Reflecting on his success, Matthew said: “It was a very pleasant surprise to be nominated for the award, let alone being chosen to win it. A big thank you to everybody in the training department and all my colleagues at the Hangar who have supported me throughout my learning journey so far!”

Finalist Harry also commented: “Being nominated for this award celebrates the hard work I have put into my Aircraft Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship over the past five years at Jet2.com. I am thankful to those who nominated myself as well as both the training team and engineers I have worked with throughout my time at the company that have helped me to reach the position I am in now. I am looking forward to continuing to develop and progress my career in aircraft engineering.”
